As the Washington Football Team continues to stumble through one of the league’s most perplexing quarterback situations this season, the individual who receives the most questions about it is sitting in Jacksonville.
Okay, that’s an exaggeration. Washington coach Ron Rivera receives more questions about his quarterback room than anybody else. Jay Gruden, offensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars, isn’t far behind.
“He has two options,” remarked Gruden, the previous WFT head coach, when Haskins was chosen (albeit not by Gruden or any of Washington’s other football executives). “He can either learn from this and bounce, seize the next chance, and work his tail off, or he can’t.” I’m confident he’ll be ready to go the next time he gets the chance.”
In Washington, some may argue that Gruden’s remarks are nothing more than political correctness. Washington dismissed 2019 first-round pick Haskins on Monday, a guy selected by WFT owner Dan Snyder against the preferences of then-head coach Gruden.
“He’s a good quarterback,” remarked Gruden. “He was a first-round draught selection, and it hasn’t panned out the way everybody expected, including me.” I never imagined he’d be discharged so early in his career.”
Definitely not. Rivera made the choice based on his inconsistencies and evident disrespect for procedure as a leader.
Haskins became a free agent after going unclaimed on waivers. Gruden agrees with our assessment (see below) that the young quarterback will be given another shot.
“Yeah,” Gruden said. “Big quarterbacks who can rip it are hard to come by.” I believe he has a lot of things to improve on, as do all young quarterbacks… If he continues to work carefully in the summer on his mental and physical approach to the game, as pro quarterbacks are expected to do, he can accomplish it.”
That is clearly an allegation from Gruden that Dwayne Haskins did not do so during Gruden’s tenure in Washington… and also throughout Rivera’s tenure. What did Jay Gruden say about Haskins.
